Canadian Resume Format. How to Write Resume for Jobs in Canada

Are you wondering about how to write a resume to apply for jobs in Canada? Or whether the Canadian Resume Format is something completely different from the usual formats you know of.

Well, guess what, the Canadian format is not anything new. They, like most other countries, prefer the usual chronological or the reverse-chronological resume format.

Now, let us look at some writing tips for a Canadian Resume to make sure it grabs the attention of the hiring managers.

What to Include in a Canadian Resume Format

As you now know, the Canadian resume format is mostly the same as other ones. Thus, the sections to be included depend mainly on the kind of job you are applying for. Keeping that in mind, we have listed some of the common things you can include in your resume no matter what the job role is.

  • Contact Details

This section is a must for every kind of resume out there. Your name, email id, phone number, and other contact details will go under this section. There is no need to add your detailed home address here or multiple email addresses. However, check once whether you can be reached through the email id or the phone number you have provided.

  • Resume Objective or Summary

Including a resume objective at the top of your resume serves as your professional introduction and there is simply no reason to skip it.

If you have a lot of experience and qualifications for the job you want to apply for, you may instead write a summary talking about your achievements. Choose the one that suits you the best.

  • Working Experiences

No doubt, this is the foremost section that your hiring managers are interested in. List all your relevant past experiences with the most recent one at the top and the rest as follows.

Also, emphasize your responsibilities and achievements in every previous job using bullets points. Including keywords from the job listing in this section will help you get past the automated applicant tracking system as well as catch your employer’s attention.

In case, you do not have much or rather any relevant professional experience, you may include your internships, training, or volunteering experiences.

  • Acquired Skills

This is another section in a resume that you cannot omit. Customize your resume to include all the necessary and relevant skills for the job role. It is preferable to put your soft skills along with your hard skills that are required for the position you are applying for.

  • Educational Qualifications

Applicants tend to skip their education details considering it not that important as compared to skills and experiences. That is not true at all. Your educational details might seem trivial to you, but it is quite necessary.

You can add your school, course, and graduation date in this section. Any relevant degree or qualification, or even a high GPA can make you look more desirable for the job.

What to not Include in a Canadian Resume Format

In the previous section, you got to know of the sections you can include in your Canadian resume format. Now, is there anything that you should not put in your resume? Yes, there are few things you are better off not including in your resume.

  • Your Photo is quite unnecessary in your resume. Unless a company specifically asks you to include your photo in the resume, refrain from doing such a task.
  • Personal Details like your marital status, your age, your religion, or even your complete home address should not be put in your resume. Remember, your resume is a document that shows your professional expertise and you do not want to ruin it by making such a beginner mistake.
  • No need to write your References in your resume. Do not waste your valuable space in your resume for references that the company, if required, will ask for separately.

In general, try to write a focused resume for every job application emphasizing the important details and always proofreading your resume before submitting it. You may also write a cover letter to mention things that you could not include in your resume or to simply get an edge over other applicants.
