7 Resume Words You Should Never Use

In case you are confused, let me tell you that resume words do make a significant difference in your chances of getting selected. Ever heard of the saying “First impression is the last impression”. Then, you definitely don’t want to create a negative first impression of you on the recruiters. For that you better avoid the following resume words.

  1. Personal Pronouns

Use of words like ‘I’, ‘me’ or ‘my’ in your resume make you look extremely unprofessional. Rather than starting the sentences with ‘I’ or ‘my’, it is always a better idea to omit them from all of your sentences. Otherwise, this may hinder your chances of getting an interview.

  1. Negative Words

We know that using negative words, anywhere it may be, leaves a bad impression of you on others. The same can be said for a resume. Writing negative sentences doesn’t help you at all, rather sometimes it may reduce your chances in getting the job.

  1. Punctual

It is one of the fundamental criteria that you should fulfill no matter what kind of job you are applying for. Or at least the company counts it as a necessity. That is why, there is no need for you to mention this explicitly in your resume. The company may think you are using this because you have nothing else to say about yourself.

  1. Hard worker

Another one of the words that the company doesn’t want you to write explicitly. They expect you to work hard if you are getting a job. Writing this resume word will only make your resume look long and boring.

  1. Ambitious

You may have written this word to emphasize that you are not lazy, but this resume word can act as a double-edged sword. The company may think that your ambitious behavior will make you quit their company for a better one. As such, you can never become a loyal employee. For your own good, it is best to avoid it.

  1. MS Office

A resume should only include only the relevant skills for the job you are applying for.  Writing anything else is basically a waste of time and space. And including MS Office as a skill of yours is definitely inappropriate. Because, it is not a skill that makes you stand out, but a necessity that every company wants.

  1. References available by request

Including this resume word is pretty much useless. Because it is a given, that if they are interested, they will ask for references. And you will provide them with all that. So there is no need for you to state the obvious.
